Worship Guitar 101
Worship Guitar
Welcome to Worship Guitar 101. If you're beyond the basics of playing guitar and would like to learn how to play worship music on guitar or bass but you don't know how to play the worship style, then this is the course for you.
An Easy Approach For Newcomers
In this course, I walk you through a handful of modern worship songs and show you how I approach them on acoustic, electric, and bass. Rather than teach you the specific parts from the original song performances, I show you how I take a simplified approach and play basic parts that fill space appropriately for the worship genre. This lesson material is appropriate for guitarists who already know how to play songs using open chords, power chords, and barre chords but are unsure how to play in the worship style.
Worship guitar parts can be quite intricate and use a lot of carefully programmed effects. This can make it difficult and overwhelming for new players who are venturing onto the Sunday morning stage for the first time. It’s even time-consuming for an experienced player like me to try to re-create recorded guitar parts in a live setting. That's why I typically take a simplified approach so that I don't get bogged down with too many details, and I can make the music sound good without much preparation. This is how I recommend newcomers to the worship team first learn how to play songs. With the foundation I provide in this course, you can show up Sunday morning feeling confident and sounding good.
If you're hoping that I will teach the songs in this course note-for-note and provide instruction on how to re-create the parts as they are performed in the original recordings, this is not the course for you. Instead, this course is for experienced beginners to intermediate-level guitarists who want to get started with worship music by playing songs in a simplified yet adequate manner that avoids your need to memorize a bunch of parts.
Skills taught in this course include how to:
- Choose good chord voicings
- Play strum patterns that fit the feel of the music
- Use a capo
- Play chord progressions by number
- Transpose songs to different keys
- Dial-in appropriate electric guitar sounds
- Play parts in different positions on the fretboard
- Play bass lines that provide a solid foundation.
I also explain what goes through my mind when I play, how I choose my parts, navigate the fretboard, and prepare for Sunday morning services as quickly and easily as possible.
Instead of looking at this as a course to learn how to play specific worship songs, look at it as a training method that will help you develop the skills necessary to play in the general worship style, so you can approach any worship song confidently and without needing to know all of its specific parts.
The six songs used for practice are:
- “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)” Matt Redman
- “What A Beautiful Name” Hillsong Worship
- “This Is Amazing Grace” Phil Wickham
- “Cornerstone” Hillsong Worship
- “How Great Is Our God” Chris Tomlin
- “Living Hope” Phil Wickham
I walk you through all these songs and show you how I approach them on acoustic, electric, and bass.
